On Saturday I went into NYC to go to my first Refine Method class since January 28 (I was 33 weeks pregnant when I stopped)!
I felt all sorts of nerves heading in to the studio. I was terrified of the workout. I am seriously out of shape in terms of strength.
The good news is that I survived. I was high on life when I left. I forgot how good it feels to lift weights. I love running but there is something amazing about the fatigue felt after a class full of strength and high-intensity cardio exercises! I am extremely sore but that was a given. I took it very easy and used all of the suggested ‘beginner’ weight options with the exercises that used kettle bells and when we used the pulley.
The bad (and obvious) news is that I noticed a lot of weaknesses when doing balance exercises. I felt like I had no control of my body when I did single leg movements and step up exercises on the boxes. My hips felt loose and my ankles rolled. It is definitely something I will work on. I am also much stronger on my left side (upper body) and I think it is because that is the main arm I use when I hold the baby. I have not done much core work or corrective work for the diastasis recti (separation of the ab muscles, great post about the condition here), so I was pleasantly surprised that I was able to complete the push ups and planks without trouble!
I need to find a way to fit this class into my schedule at least 1x each week. I absolutely love it and miss it.
How was your weekend? What is our favorite strength exercise or class?
Did anyone run the NYC Marathon? If so, Congrats! What an amazing accomplishment, especially with the wind!
