It is no secret that I love the workout class, Refine Method. I can never put the reason why I love it into words so I asked someone else to help me out.
Hi guys! I’m Abby, a physical therapy doctoral candidate, run coach, personal trainer, Lululemon Ambassador alumni, and all-around sweaty runner. I live and work in NYC and blog over at Run Stronger Every Day. I sometimes sport a bun, but never nearly as awesome as Ashley’s.
I’m a nerd. Like, a big nerd. I read medical journals and textbooks because I find them interesting. I couldn’t put down David Epstein’s The Sports Gene (you should get it, too!). I’m a stickler for form in exercise and I spend the majority of my time thinking about how to fix the way we move.
Oh, I’m a physical therapy student. So, that makes sense, I guess.
One of my jobs as a run coach and personal trainer is to try stay on top of the latest fitness trends and studios happening in NYC. This is not my favorite thing to do, but I like to stay well-informed so I do it.
I never expect much when I’m trying out a new workout. I’ve been woefully underwhelmed by the hip, trendy studios that claim to burn 1000 calories in 45 minutes (note: ummm, not really possible) or turn you into a power lifter in a month (ouch and NO!).
So, when I signed up to try “New York’s smartest workout”, I was skeptical.
And now I am hooked on Refine Method for life. For. Life.
- It is truly a smart workout. Brynn (founder) & Co. utilize the scientifically proven exercise principles of periodization, repetition, and overload.
- The class size is small so there’s lots of individual attention both to form (love it!) and whether or not you’re using an appropriate weight.
- Brynn is super-creative with the tools in the studio and the workout constantly changes from class to class and month to month.
- Fun music.
#5 is a biggie. I will stick with a workout I like for 4-6 weeks to see if it does what the PR Team advertises it’s supposed to do. If I’m not seeing results, that’s it.
With Refine Method, I got stronger in the classes and was able to move up in my weights and reps and that’s all good. But I’m a runner. My goal is to run faster. And I did. I got in MUCH better shape and saw my times drop by 30 seconds per mile during marathon training by hitting up Refine two times a week.
Brynn and I are known to nerd out together about how to best serve the community of Refiners in terms of injury prevention and how to target weak areas. This is one of my favorite things about Refine and Brynn. The workout is constantly evolving and striving to be the best and smartest workout out there.
And it is.
I don’t trust my body to just anyone. But I trust it with Brynn and her team at Refine Method.
What is your absolute favorite workout class? Why do you love it?
